Case Study: Scenario #2

Janet just completed her fourth divorce. She is in her early 30s. Her personal life is in chaos. She has children by three of her former husbands. Janet has struggled with addiction issues over the years including alcohol and drugs. She came from a very difficult family where her parents were alcoholics and often fought with each other. Janet was sexually abused by her uncle on more than one occasion when he lived with the family during her early teen years. Janet’s problems with drugs and alcohol began as a teenager.

Personal information

Within this case study, I observed multiple issues for Jane to address in order to achieve a more positive life path and achieve goals through counseling. Although the case provided minimal background and limited details, I found it evident that Jane has struggled with relationship, drug and alcohol addiction, and sexual issues for years. In order to effectively develop a counseling plan, I must conduct a pre-assessment session/interview with Jane to obtain vital information regarding her: relationship and spiritual background, reasoning for the session, family history, intentions, expectations, commitment, phobia, and any past traumatic events/experiences. Using this information, I will be able to better assist Jane with her overall needs, desire, and goal for the end state for seeking counseling.

It is crucial I fully understand not only all of her life experiences, but her spiritual background and linkage to her life. As I am a spiritual person, I must fully know how this plays a role in her life and desires in order to determine if spiritual and religious methods can be incorporated into the counseling plan without crossing the line. Together, I and Jane will determine whether or not if prayer and other spiritual methods can and should...
