Since time immemorial, the human race has been faced by the daunting task of making decisions. These decisions have come a long way in determining outcomes of different situations we face. Outcomes impact either positively or negatively to our lives as human beings. What makes decisions impact positively to our lives is the ability to effectively make decisions. Effective decision making entails choosing the most suitable alternative to a problem. Effective decision makers identify and define the problem at hand. Subsequently, they identify the most suitable criteria to be applied in solving these problems.

The late Nelson Mandela was an example of an effective decision maker. His effective decision making helped liberate South Africa from the Apartheid régime. The regime promoted racial injustice to the black race in South Africa. Similarly, his effective decision making helped place South Africa as a democratic Republic governed strictly by its constitution. Democracy would mean that the social, political and economic status of the country would be stable. Truth be told. South Africa has had the most thriving economy in Africa since. This was unlike other African states whose founding presidents had the tendency of disregarding the constitution. Henceforth, their social, political and economic statuses have dwindled in recent times (Schoemaker, 2013).

Effective decision makers focus on long term goals and achievements. They also have the ability to sacrifice their comfort, status quo for the greater good. Nelson Mandela displayed these traits. He made a decision to sacrifice the comfort of seeing his children grow for the greater liberation of South Africa.
