Short Answer Questions:

1. Caleb has abnormal heart sounds that tipped the doctor off to a problem.

a. Name the normal sounds of the heart and indicate what causes these sounds.

A normal heartbeat has a sound resembling lub-dub, lub-dub, lub-dub. The first part of the heartbeat sound “lub” happens when the bicuspid and tricuspid valves contract. The second part of the heartbeat sound “dub” happens when the pulmonary and aortic valves contract

2. The defect in Caleb’s heart allows blood to mix between the two ventricular chambers.

a. Due to this defect would you expect the blood to move from left-to-right ventricle or right-to-left ventricle during systole?

During systole the blood would probably move from the left ventricle to the right ventricle.

b. Based on your understanding of blood pressure and resistance in the heart and great vessels, explain your answer to question 3a.

Things move from a space of more concentration to a space of less concentration, same goes for blood. The pressure in the right ventricle is lover than the blood pressure in the left ventricle. The pressure difference comes from when the ventricles eject the blood. The Right ventricle has lower pressure because the pulmonary vessels have less resistance than the vessels that go to the rest of the body.

3. When an echocardiogram is performed, the technician color-codes oxygenated blood (red) and deoxygenated blood (blue).

a. In a healthy baby, what color would the blood be within the right and left ventricles, respectively?

Deoxygenated blood, which is typically looks blue, is in the right ventricle and the oxygenated blood, which is typically red, is in the left ventricle.
