INTRODUCTION:

Needs analysis is a critical activity for the training and development function. Whether you are a human resource generalist or a specialist, you should be adept at performing a training needs assessment. Needs assessment is a process used to identify whether training is the correct intervention for a performance problem. The importance of needs assessment cannot be overemphasized. When a needs assessment is not conducted or conducted improperly, a training program may fail to clearly meet the performance need, thus resulting in diminishing returns on what is likely a costly investment. Needs analysis can be defined as a process to identify gaps or deficiencies in employee and organizational performance. It is important to identify training needs before trying to implement any training solutions.

Need Analysis Process Related to the Issue:

The needs analysis helps to identify the causes and the solution to the performance problems. The steps of the Need Analysis are as follows:

Concern: First step in the need analysis process. This is the process of identifying training needs originates slowly and informally with concern. This concern may be referred to as an itch or pressure points something that causes the manager to notice it. This concern might be as subtle as noticing that employees are treating customer in an abrupt manner, or observing that employees are spending lot of time asking one another for help with new system. Other concerns might be recognising shift regular activities, such as increase in defective parts, accidents or complaints. In the sales representative case, the concern is the sales representative is not meeting the target. This is the pressure point where the manager get notice the problem exists.

Importance: Next step is to determine whether the concern is central to the effectiveness of the organization. The training manager must...
