Introduction

I. If you were at the mall and you saw a small child crying while wondering around the food court and you approached them to ask what was wrong, most likely they are going to say I want my mommy or Daddy, Correct?

II. Children are programmed from a very young age to love their parents and need their parent’s guidance.

III. I know this fact personally. The first thing my son screams in to the baby monitor when he wakes up is “MOM (or DAD)! OPEN THE DOOR!!” He says this because we are his favorite people in the world. He wants to play with us and spend time with us. He watches our every move and asks questions regularly.

BODY

I. There are also going to be times that you have to discipline your child for unacceptable behaviors.

She also recommends that all children at some point in their lives are going to demonstrate behavior that is going to anger their parents or put themselves in danger.

II. This is why, we as parents, or future parents, NEED to use timeouts!

A. Immediately following a negative behavior tell your child that he or she will be receiving a timeout for their behavior.

B. Timeouts are most successful because they take the child away from their parent’s attention.

III. If your child has repeatedly shaved off a portion of his hair you are obviously going to be angry. This is where the time out comes in! It gives you two a chance to cool off...
