Should the U.S. government or the American Medical Association place restrictions on the gifts and perks drug companies are allowed to offer physicians? Why or why not? Use specific examples from the reading in your answer.

In my opinion, there are seemingly possible ethical issues which come with the reception of gifts and such things as lunches and paid speeches, however if one does a cost benefit analysis of the situation, one could postulate that the outcome is that the perks from pharmaceutical companies are not unethical due to several factors. For one, the doctors’ offices receive free lunches which the lower paid office workers take advantage of, and they are the main recipients of these perks, The doctors do allow this to happen, but the main recipients are the office workers. Yes the lunches are designed to get time with the doctor, but with the doctor allowing the free lunches they are giving up their time for the benefit of their workers. This means that the actual perk doesn’t go to the doctor, but rather to the office workers first, and the pharmaceutical companies second, with the doctor being last on the list. The article mentions that the office workers are often not paid much, and they rely on the free lunches as a part of their salary. They don’t have to leave the office, they don’t have to spend anything for lunch, and they have lunch delivered to them. The doctor’s time is worth a certain amount, and because the doctor is giving up their time, they are actually providing time for less than they would have per hour of their professional time. Therefore this is a giving moment for the doctor, and this is not an unethical practice with the staff receiving the benefit while the doctors take a net loss on their time.
