Effective Negotiation Skills

Among the cardinal effects of the industrial revolution was the introduction of commerce in every sector of life. The healthcare and nursing sector is no exception. The ability to effectively function in nursing is subordinate to the creation of an economically viable healthcare institution. It, therefore, follows that astute entrepreneurship is generally paramount to effective caregiving. Among the key areas of entrepreneurship in nursing and healthcare is the art of negotiation. Negotiation is defined as a discussion aimed at arriving at a consensus or agreement. Negotiations mainly result in an agreement when they are between two parties or clusters, such as a contract. However, in a general forum such as a committee or a meeting, the targeted result for negotiation is a consensus. This research paper uses practical case studies to evaluate on the skills necessary for negotiations geared towards consensus and agreement singularly and severally.

Part 1: Effective Negotiation Techniques

Negotiations toward an agreement as aforesaid mainly put two parties against each other, with each respective party seeking for the best possible terms. Among the three most important negotiation techniques is preparation. Preparation entails learning all material things regarding the topic for negotiation. ‘Debriefing after negotiating and documenting the experience no matter what, is important. Consistency is essential’ (McGuigan, 2015, p. 357). Part of preparation is using experiences earned in previous negotiations and this greatly helps during preparations for kindred negotiations. Through debriefing and proper documentation, involved individuals will be able to consistently enhance their negotiation skills and consequently get positive feedback....
