Unit Eight: Communication Problems

In this week’s case study, the topic is poor managerial communication. James Caruso is the manager of a public relations firm with only four reporting employees. Although he is very intelligent, he lacks effective communications skills. In effect, this inefficiency is causing conflict in his firm. His employees are quick to list his weaknesses; missed deadlines, ineffective communication, lack of employee satisfaction, just to name a few. This paper will discuss some of his problems and suggestions to help Mr. Caruso improve his relationship with not only his employees, but also his clients.

Many bosses are accused of being “poor communicators” because they are not they are not effective in getting their message across clearly to their employees. As stated in the case study, does not reinforce the good behavior that his employees display. He does not set a good example of what is expected since he does not meet deadlines, does not communicate well with his clients, does not listen to his employees, uses a condescending tone and criticizes his employees. These send confusing messages to his employees, which leaves them frustrated, unmotivated and unsatisfied with their jobs.

Many bosses are unwilling to learn what it takes to be better communicators in way that is beneficial to the employee as well as to themselves. In addition, many bosses do not take into consideration that each employee reacts differently in similar situations. This leads bosses to treat all employees the same and that does not improve communications.

More so, bosses have the tendency to be condescending because of their managerial or executive status. Sometimes their position influences their thinking and actions. The higher the position, the more supervisors or managers feel a certain degree of pride and superiority over their employees....
