Technology in the classroom

Although most students today will use some sort of technology in the home before even entering school they will become very familiar with its uses throughout the first part on his/her school career. Children in today society are born in to the digital world and from the time they are toddlers will be learning to change the station on the television, using the computer, working the dvd player and even playing video games. At five years old when entering kindergarten they already have a strong sense of technology and ready to go, so we as teacher better be ready.

There are many technologies widely available for teachers in K-12 education such as video content, digital moviemaking, laptop computing handheld technologies and pod casting have been used to help students to learn in his/her own learning style and help the teachers to reach the diverse community of the classroom. The drawback to this is most teachers today are immigrants to the new digital world therefor must be trained and comfortable in using these new methods. There are National standards for both students and teachers that must be followed to make sure teachers are being effective as they design, implement, and assess learning experiences to engage students and improve learning. (ISTE>NETS 2008) In today’s ever changing digital world teachers must commit to being lifelong learner in order to effectively teach.

I plan to teach second or third grade where I know even by this stage in the student’s ability, although quite advanced with technology they are still learning where to use it and how to prefect it. I feel the two standards that will be the easiest to implement at this stage is #2 Communications and Collaboration, in which the students are allowed to work together using a variety of digital media.
