Innovation, design, and creativity maintain and improve an organization’s competitive advantage. Four areas impacted in an organization effected by innovation are strategy, process, product, and services. Several organizations and industries make changes in one or all impacted areas to achieve, maintain, or improve levels of success. As times change organizations change to keep up with demand of those changes. In order to gain further insight into how an organization can stay competitive through the impact of innovation, design, and creativity to strategy, process, product and services this paper explores the changes three organizations have and continue to go through; Starbucks, and Coca-Cola.

Starbucks

The first Starbucks opened in 1970 in Seattle’s historic Pike Place Market. Starbucks tastes coffee from around the world seeking the freshest, finest, and most interesting coffee beans. In 1982 Howard Schults joined Starbucks bringing along with him ideas of adding lattes and mochas to the Seattle menu changing the culture forever. Innovation impacts the success of the coffee giant and soon many wanted a cup of coffee from Starbucks. The product, a cup of coffee, is turning into much more as the company spreads across the country and the world. Starbucks growth comes from the changes over the years in strategies, processes, product, and services offered by the organization. The Starbucks mission statement is to inspire and nurture the human spirit – on person, one cup, and one neighborhood at a time (Starbucks Coffee Company, 2009). To achieve its mission Starbucks continues to add products such as coffee flavors, additional menu items like danishes, services like free WiFi, a comfortable atmosphere, and a social culture appealing to people of all ages and social economic backgrounds.
