Week 1 Pine Valley Case Study

How did Pine Valley Furniture go about developing its information systems? Why do you think the company chose this option? What other options were available?

Pine Valley decided to go with an in-house application process versus the option of a prepackaged system. We do not know the specifics for the decision to go in-house, but one theory could be that they had a set of unique processes that were specific to their organization and could not be purchased as a prepackaged system. Other options were a prepackaged system or enterprise-wide system.

One option available to Pine Valley Furniture was an enterprise-wide system. What features does an enterprise-wide system, such as SAP, provide? What is the primary advantage of an enterprise-wide system?

SAP is an enterprise-wide information system provides a single repository of data that ensures more consistent and accurate data, as well as less maintenance. One primary advantage of an enterprise-wide information system is that data is accessible throughout the organization more effectively and it is more cost efficient.

Pine Valley Furniture will be hiring two systems analysts next month. Your task is to develop a job advertisement for these positions. Locate several Web sites or newspapers that have job advertisements for systems analysts. What skills are required?

The skills that I noticed were required for the SA jobs consisted of, but not limited to:

Knowledge and experience in business requirements gathering and development

Systems analysis and functional design experience

Strong verbal and written communication skills that non-technical end users can understand

Experience with documentation and problem resolution
