Evaluating the Research Process
The article of choice, Electronic Medical Record Use and Efficiency of Utilization, written by Michael F. Furukawa, PhD tries to determine the efficiency of electronic medical record (EMR). The article’s objective is to estimate the relationship between EMR use and efficiency of utilization and provider productivity during visits to US office-based physicians. The focus of the paper will show how literature review was used in the research process as well the ethical considerations for data collection. Other topics include statistical analysis and if the findings were significant in determining the conclusion of the study.
The Literature Review
In the article the author reviewed studies that suggest that EMR use has the potential to improve efficiency of utilization. Prior studies of the association of EMR use with the efficiency of utilization have been limited. An EMR system may include clinical notes, problem/medication lists, and test results. These functions can provide information about chronic conditions and prior utilization, which might reduce redundant and inappropriate diagnostic/screening services and medications (Furukawa, 2011). There was also the review of three large-scale studies that were conducted to try and find a relationship that ties EMR use and quality of care in an ambulatory setting. Whether and to what extent that EMR use is associated with the level of utilization during visits remains uncertain (Furukawa, 2011).
The article also goes on to review EMR use and provider productivity. It establishes that an EMR system can automate manual tasks, streamline documentation, and improve access to information. In theory, EMR functions can help support clinical decision making as well as reduce physician’s time. There have been mixed results in trying to establish this connection (EMR use and provider productivity)...
