Hibiscus Sister came on the internet much to the dismay of the Chinese Censors. China’s Communists rulers did not appreciate the attention Hibiscus Sister, an unknown until she posted herself on a website, was getting and moved her website to a less trafficked area on the internet. China censors politically sensitive topics on the internet. There is no freedom of expression on websites on the internet in China; they do not want people looking at and searching internet sites that have anything to do with human rights and democracy.

China has companies that sell hardware and filtering devices to block access to certain sites. “Microsoft said it would block access within China to individual blogs at Beijing’s behest.” China is facing an ethical dilemma regarding the internet. When you are in the states and you Google “Tiananmen Square” you see the massacre that happened to the students who were demonstrating for human rights; when you Google the same thing in China you see a nice tourist area.

Chinese citizens on the internet are growing in rapid numbers 110 million internet users and 16 million bloggers now up from 2000 in 2002. China has created the Great Firewall. They are censoring everything that is posted on the internet and are brining American companies along for the ride in China. “Google, Yahoo and Microsoft are major players in China, while EBay and Amazon have secured footholds there with local acquisitions.”
