Business Integrity

Alan K. Simpson said, “If you have integrity, nothing else matters. If you don't have integrity, nothing else matters” (Moment, 2004). Integrity, as defined by Allbusiness.com, is “quality characterized by honesty, reliability, and fairness, developed in a relationship over time “ (2012) The dictionary definition of integrity is “adherence to moral and ethical principles; soundness of moral character; honesty; the state of being whole, entire, or undiminished; a sound, unimpaired, or perfect condition.” Although, as humans, we are not able to always be perfect, this is where integrity comes in. The Director of the Institute of Business Ethics, Philippa Foster Black, stated: “Not only is ethical behavior in the business world the right and principled thing to do, but it has been proven that ethical behavior pays off in financial returns.”

As we have discussed in this unit, community involvement and social responsibility needs to be demonstrated by being responsible and maintaining good ethics. The community will have a decreased sense of respect for the organizations or businesses that establish an unethical relationship between them and the law. It is an encouraging step for businesses to be familiar with the meaning of integrity and it being an instrument for attaining preferred results. Trust is the core of a company. Clients and customers need to know they are doing business with a company they can trust. The ability to have that trust is part of integrity. The Eight Steps Toward Integrity explains why integrity is a conscious decision based on a subconscious classic conditioning. The list includes, but is not limited to, keeping promises, doing the correct thing and accepting the consequences, taking responsibility, respecting others, and understanding rules and values.
