How is the procurement of construction work being arranged for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2014? Are there any lessons that can be learnt from the procurement of construction work for the London 2012 Olympics?

The Commonwealth Games, Glasgow 2014

Glasgow will host the Commonwealth Games in 2014 and this will be a boost to the cities economy both directly and indirectly. The hosting of these Games will provide many opportunities for businesses in the run up to the games, during the games, and after the games. Opportunities will exist for the procurement of good, works and services of all types and values from a huge range of companies and industries, with the largest capital expenditure being on construction and regeneration.

According to the procurement information that has been released regarding the games, the procurement of services required for the Games will fall into three broad categories:

• Specialist Support Services (2008 onwards)

These services are most like to be delivered on a consultancy basis.

• Infrastructure and Capital Investment (2009 onwards)

This is when G2014 Ltd and its delivery partner Glasgow City Council will procure and deliver new venues and other infrastructure required for the games.

• Temporary Games Overlay (2012-2014)

This will cover provisions of services and temporary infrastructure required for the games.

The bulk of procurement for the construction work for the Games is likely to take place between 2009 and 2012 and will occur in line with a program of venues’ and facilities’ development which will follow the detailed requirements necessary to deliver the Games.
