Church or Coffee House?

With more the 450 sects and denominations of Christianity in the world the question we ask ourselves is “which one is correct?” I think more importantly we should be asking ourselves which ones are false? Is it the growing typical American Sunday church that serves Starbucks coffee, gathers in large buildings, uses massive screens and projectors, has a popular worship band, great sound system, free donuts, and a charismatic pastor? What message are we sending about our beliefs as followers of Christ by making these things priorities for worship? Not only are we making them priorities but we are allowing them to help further dilute our Gospel as well. How do we correct this fallacy in our doctrines? It’s an easy answer; we identify these churches, expose them, remove ourselves and our families and inform others about their destructive, false, misguiding Gospels.

In order to examine the false doctrines and poor leadership in these churches we must first look at the crowd and generation they cater to. In today’s modern society it is easy to attract visitors and “thrill” seekers with a few eye easy signs, manmade subject series and Lord knows we all love Starbucks. But we have to ask ourselves, just what are we trying to attract? A superficial crowd of people who will be likened to the multitudes that left Jesus after he refused another miracle of bread? A crowd of those people like the Pharisees that were concerned more about tradition than the fulfilling of a new covenant? These types of crowds we as Christians are trying to attract with a new “modern” Christianity are not hearing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They are listening to a watered down, Christianity light version of the Jesus man has made in his image and wants.

Now let’s not go off the deep end and say that all churches who serve coffee and donuts are preaching false doctrine or leading people astray. My point here is that Christians and churches that speak the...
