Choosing a Communication Medium

Various different methods used to communicate electronically include but not limited to e-mail, Internet Chat Relay (IRC), teleconferencing, and texting. These mediums, on a daily basis, are included in normal operations with most companies. Computer-mediated communications split into synchronous and asynchronous modes.

In asynchronous communication, all involved parties are “detached” from one another and there is a delay between messages. This can be useful for tasks that are not time sensitive and do not require a “on demand” response like e-mail and texting. Some people use this type of communication for a more “detached” approach. With synchronous communication the participants are all “in-time” with each other, such as teleconferencing and IRC. This type of communication is best used when requiring an immediate response or similar of a face-to-face conversation. In addition, with advances in video conferencing media servers integrate for visual implementation to assist in getting the full picture.

It is in my opinion that a combination of email and teleconferencing will interchange to achieve proper remote training. Using email to coordinate the necessary paperwork to individuals and set up date and times for the teleconferencing. Depending on the hardware that is at the company’s disposal for this training venture, teleconferencing can be as remote as someone’s mobile device.

Since there are a variety of sources for of all of the training media, someone in the company should organize the media in such a way that moves to the strengths of the people viewing the training. The technical specifications and background information will be more prominent in the training for the IT dept and maybe the training will adjust for the Sales department to focus on what the product can do for the customers. Or possibly another option would be to have a overview of the entire scope, so everyone will have a idea what the other...
