In the case of Greta Harrington and her children, the children do not have the right to successfully invalidate her newly made will. They do have very good arguments but without being made the power of attorney for Greta they cannot make decisions for her yet. She is also not yet diagnosed with Alzheimer’s; she is just simply forgetful and still is living independently and is not stated to be incompetent. Older people make many mistakes as their minds aren’t what they used to be anymore but invalidating her new will would be like taking her rights away.

From a legal standpoint a mother is allowed to disinherit her children if she chooses to do so unfortunately. The law doesn’t want to take away anyone’s freedom without a justifiable reason and the reasons stated are not such reasons. She is still at an age and point in her life where she can make her own choices and if she hasn’t elected a power of attorney anybody else has a say in any decisions she makes.

From an ethical standpoint in this case she shouldn’t be allowed to disinherit her children. Her husband of many years and father of her kids left a will stating these kids get this property when he goes and she has an ethical duty to fallow that. Leaving the property that was half his to another man is totally unethical on Greta’s part but I do believe it has something to do with her brain deteriorating with her old age. It seems that Greta is being manipulated by this man which is very unethical on his part as well. Greta got everything in the event of her husband’s death and is now going to leave her children with nothing, which is very unfair. This family was obviously very wealthy and the parents should want to give it to their kids to give them an advantage at life and improve their lives as an ethical duty.

In an event like this the best thing the kids can do is to talk to Greta about how they are feeling and possibly she will understand. They are after all her...
