Gender issues are a big problem for most women in the United States. It is estimated that for every dollar a man makes, a women makes 78 cents. It’s not only a problem when it comes to income; it’s also a problem when it comes to wealth, work, schooling, sports, and power. Being a male is becoming a privileged class on its own. This is a problem, especially for families that are being raised by a single parent mother. The U.S and most countries worldwide have gender problems because they are probably a patriarchal society.  Patriarchy basically means “rule of the father”.  Gender has been a problem dating back to ancient times, where women couldn’t do anything basically.  They were basically treated as property.  Egypt was one of the first civilizations to be matriarchal.  They allowed a woman to have the same rights as a man, and there were several women rulers which was unheard of in ancient times and might still be taboo today.  Maybe because men are more physical and tend to speak up more, they can assert themselves when it comes to power, and work.  But just think about if a woman was assertive.  Or if they were more physical than or just as physical as a man was, they would be out casted and called all kinds of names. Therefore, being assertive is discouraging for females. What society expects out of men and what society expects out of females are two very different expectations. Until us as a society can learn to expect the same for both genders, there will always be a gender issue in America, and males will continue to benefit from it. In this paper I will write about why gender is a central dimension of social stratification in the United States. And to a certain extent that males are becoming a privileged class of people in this country today.
