Abstract
Blue-ray technology is the cutting edge of digital media in our lifetime. With the implementation of HDTV it has now become necessary to store greater data on smaller discs. This new technology, jointly developed by some of the bigger names in electronics, will be able to do just that. But like with any new technology, cost and availability remain in the forefront. It will take time for consumers to embrace the new concept, but over time it will win the battle over DVD formats much like VHS won the battle against Betamax.
Blu-ray
Blu-ray is the name of a next-generation optical disc format developed jointly by Blu-ray Disc Association, a group of the world's leading consumer electronics, personal computer and media manufacturers (including Apple, Dell, Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK and Thomson). The format was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video. A single-layer disc can hold 25GB, which can hold 2 hours of high definition recording. Current optical disc technologies like DVDs use a red laser to read and write data, the new format uses a blue-violet laser instead, thus the name Blu-ray. Despite the different type of lasers used, Blu-ray products can easily be made backwards compatible through the use of a BD/DVD/CD compatible optical pickup, which will allow the playback of CDs and DVDs. Using a blue-violet laser with a shorter wavelength makes it able to focus the laser spot with even greater precision than before. It will allow data to be packed more tightly, so that more data can fit on the disk even though it's the same size as a CD/DVD. Since HDTV is rapidly growing, the consumer demand for recording HD programs is quickly rising. With this new technology HDTV broadcasts can be recorded directly to the disc...
