REFLECTING ON WRITTEN COMMUNICATION IN THE WORKPLACE

The co-op work term experience provides you with an opportunity to apply classroom learning in the workplace, to discover expectations of employers, and to further develop interpersonal skills. The accounting and financial management professions have determined that personal skills such as written and oral communication, analytical skills awareness of professional ethics, and leading and participating in groups are equally as important as technical skills.

As we move forward with the implementation of a Learning Model within the School of Accounting and Finance, one set of outcomes addresses communication skills. One skill in this area is preparing written communications. Since you started your program, this outcome has been part of the evaluation a number of courses, starting with AFM 131. Continuing the type of reflective work you have done in your previous placements, you are now asked to think about how written communication in the workplace has impacted your written communication skills.

Since you started your program in the fall of 2008 you have completed a number of written assignments in various courses. In the winter of 2011 you completed ENG 210F. In this course you completed a number of written assignments and you were reminded of the relationship between writing and your credibility. The importance of conveying your thoughts and being grammatically correct were continually emphasized. Starting in the fall of 2007 all co-op students are now required to complete a series of Professional Development (PD) modules, which are designed to integrate course specific content with the workplace, while preparing all co-op program students for their professional careers.
