Introduction to Extensible HyperText Markup Language (XHTML)

• Identify basic XHTML tags and attributes.

• Explain viewing and testing markup code in various Web browsers.

• Describe how Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) are applied for formatting Web content.

2. Readings

• Read Tutorial 1, “Using HTML Tags to Create Web Pages: Creating a Basic Web Page”, in New Perspectives on Blended HTML, XHTML, and CSS: Introductory.

• Read Tutorial 2, “Using Styles to Format Web Pages: Creating a Celebrity Web Site”, in New Perspectives on Blended HTML, XHTML, and CSS: Introductory.

• Read this week’s Electronic Reserve Readings.

3. Discussion Questions

• Why is it important to test your web pages in various Web browsers?

• Explain how XML has impacted HTML. What is the current markup language standard?

• Describe how CSS can be leveraged in website programming.

4. Individual Assignment: Individual Website Project

• The individual assignments for this course will require you to design and develop a website about your profession, hobbies or interests. The site should consist of 3-5 Web pages. Your target audience will be other professionals in your field and/or potential employers. Your site should demonstrate the following characteristics:

o Effective file management.

o Accurate and functional markup code.

o Effective and functional navigation.

o Effective application of design elements.

5. Learning Team Assignment: Learning Team eCommerce Project

• Create the Learning Team Charter.
