| Barrier | Why is it a barrier? | What can be done to overcome this barrier? |

1 | Language | This is a barrier if 2 people don’t speak the same language. A person will not be able to make sense of what the other person is trying to say to them. | This can be overcome by using an interpreter who speaks the different languages of each person. The interpreter can listen to one person and then repeat the information to the other person in their desired language. |

2 | Hearing | If somebody is trying to speak to a person who is deaf this is a barrier as they will not be able to hear the person speaking. | This can be overcome by the use of sign language and hearing impairments such as hearing aids. Re-word messages so they are short and clear. Teaching and learning sign language and using hand and face gestures can help deaf people to understand the information you are trying to get across. |

3 | Emotional Distress | When a person is in distress they may find it difficult to communicate, as they may not be listening to the speaker or misinterpret the information. If they are upset they may be unable to speak. | To overcome this you would need to first find out what is distressing the person and try to calm them down and get them to listen to you carefully, speaking calmly and in a soft voice avoiding conflict. |

For example ‘innit’ instead of ‘isn’t it’. When used in a health setting by a doctor to a patient it can be very scary. For example if a doctor says the patient needs to go for an MRI scan. | Staying clear of using slang words can overcome this barrier. By sticking to words and phrases that are widely used can help people to understand better. When jargon is used explaining can help others feel less scared and confused. |
