Total Fitness & Wellness and Introduction to Exercise Science
Although I do not have any exercise habits at this time, I am in the process of incorporating a resistance training program into my daily routine. Resistance training, also known as weight lifting, is an exercise that causes muscles to contract against an external resistance with the expectation of increasing strength, tone, mass, and/or endurance (Weil, 2012, para. 1). Muscle strength is important in almost all sports and non-athletes require some form muscular strength to function in everyday life (Powers, & Dodd, 2009). Everyday tasks such as walking, and lifting bags require muscular strength. Muscle strength is the ability of the muscle to generate maximal force whereas, muscle endurance is the ability to generate force over and over again (Powers, & Dodd, 2009). Incorporating more cardiovascular activities into my daily routine such as aerobic exercises will not only help to increase my heart rate but also help increase strength, tone, mass, and endurance.
Locomotor skills are the basic ways in which the body moves and is also our foundation for coordination (Powers & Dodd, 2009). These activities include, but are not limited to, walking, jumping, leaping and skipping. A non-locomotor activity is where the body parts are moving, but the body stays in one spot not going anywhere. For example, stretching, twisting, and turning are non-locomotor activities. Locomotion and non-locomotion movements work on muscle development, strength, and balance within the body. Object manipulations are complex motor patterns that are basic to specialized sports and are performed with some kind of object (ex. ball, bat). This sort of skill requires hand-eye or foot-eye coordination and requires appropriate gross and fine motor skills. My resistance training program will incorporate both locomotor...
