Childhood obesity is a growing problem within the last decade for children in the U.S. According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services overweight and obesity in children are significant public health problems in the United States. “The number of adolescents who are overweight has tripled since 1980 and the prevalence among younger children has more than doubled” (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, 2011). “According to the 1999-2002 NHANES survey, 16 percent of children ages 6-19 years are overweight” (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, 2011). To help combat this ongoing epidemic many healthcare facilities such as outpatient clinics, home health agencies, hospitals, and rehabilitation facilities offer many services including nutritional evaluation, counseling, and physical therapy evaluation to help assist children with weight loss and management. “Teaching parents how to make family lifestyle changes is a key factor in the success” of these types of programs (The Hospital at The Children's Institute, 2011).

Two Healthcare Organizations

The Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford offers a comprehensive program to prevent and treat childhood obesity. The program is called Center for Healthy Weight. Health care providers and researchers “address the different causes and effects of obesity and overweight in children” (Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Standford, 2011). This center offers a wide range of services organized around five core programs in areas such as “state-of-the-art patient care, cutting-edge research, community programs, training and professional education, and avocation for public policy change” (Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Standford, 2011).
