Anonymity on the internet is an issue that has created a lot of interest among many users of the internet worldwide. Some people have supported more anonymity of the users of the internet while others have been opposed to it. This essay is going to discuss the benefits and the disadvantages of anonymity on the internet.

Pros of Internet Anonymity

The need for anonymity within internet usage has become more paramount especially when the user is handling or engaging in sensitive information. This is important for some online discussions regarding human rights issues, sexual harassment and political issues. This makes it possible for the internet users to be able to communicate without fear of retribution which would endanger their safety. The display of the real identity of the user can create problems for them making them a target for organised criminal groups and government agents. Online discussion forums can help the society to get valuable details concerning the excesses of the authorities leading to a more transparent society (Kling et al, 1999).

Anonymity on the internet makes it possible for illegal activities which hamper the free observance of law and order to be reported much more easily. Government authorities such as the police, local councils and other departments can have anonymous lines and emails through which they can get reports of any illegal activities going on. This makes it easy for the justice system to deal with financial crimes that may prove difficult to combat without obtaining crucial information.
