The Vietnam War was a military conflict that occurred during the Cold War-era, in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia from the 1st of November 1955 to the fall of Saigon on 30th of April 1975. The Cold War was an era of struggle between capitalist and communist nations that lasted from the end of World War II, 1945, into the 1990’s. Capitalism is generally an economic system where productions and goods are privately held, whereas communism is a political theory which abolishes private ownership and favours equality in a society’s economy and people. The war was therefore an ideological struggle between the liberal democratic, capitalist, free market economy West (led by USA) and the totalitarian, communist and command economy Eastern Bloc (led by the Soviet Union). These two sides both wanted to inflict their social, economic and political ideas on the world dominantly, thus the power clash between USA and the USSR. Direct military action was never featured in the Cold War, although there were multiple tensions and wars involved, including the Berlin Blockade, the Korean War, the Berlin Crisis of 1961, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Soviet war in Afghanistan and more importantly, the Vietnam War. The Cold War was more of strife using military coalitions, strategic conventional force deployments, extensive aid given to states, espionage, propaganda, conventional and nuclear arms, appeals to neutral nations, competition at sports events, and technological competitions.

The Vietnam War followed the First Indochina War, being one of the flash points in the forty-five yearlong Cold War. It occurred in present-day Vietnam, location Southeast Asia. It was fought between communist ruled North Vietnam supported by its communist allies; the USSR, China and North Korea and non-communist South Vietnam supported by the USA and Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, and the Philippines.
