Empire-An extensive group of states or countries under a single supreme authority (emperor).

Polis-A city-state in ancient Greece.

City-state-A state consisting of a sovereign city.

Acropolis-A citadel or fortified part of an ancient Greek city, typically built on a hill.

Phalanx-A group of people or things of a similar type forming a compact body or brought together for a common purpose.

Oligarchy-A small group of people having control of a country, organization, or institution.

Democracy-A system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives.

Hoplite-A heavily armed foot soldier of ancient Greece.

Helot-A member of a class of serfs in ancient Sparta.
