Virtue ethics

Explanation

Environmental virtue ethics is, as the name suggests, a way of approaching environmental ethics through the lens of virtue ethics (Wikipedia, 2012). It is paradoxically both a very new and a relatively old or established approach. It is old or established because, as Louke Van Wensveen points out, almost all environmental literature employs virtue language (Louke van Wensveen, 2000). It is new because it is only recently that this tendency to use virtue-laden language has been taken up explicitly and addressed through the lens of philosophical virtue ethics.

Virtue ethics addresses the deeper sense of the human person. Virtue ethics focuses less on what is "out there," and more on what kind of person one must become in order to live the good life. Fundamentally, virtue describes the formation of character, the development of lasting habits, which can help a person live a good life (Keith Douglass Warner, 2009).

Analysis and Evaluation

Aristotle had a concept of ‘happiness’ that meant that nothing was lacking. If there could be a better happiness, then it would be eudaimonia. Clearly, melting icecaps and freak weather isn’t eudaimonia. There are three main proposed primary virtues: justice, prudence and temperance.

* Justice means giving to each person, and each its creature, its due, in other words, what it needs to life a full life and he understood the moral and theological significance of the created world to invite humans to consider our duties to it (Keith Douglass Warner, 2009). This is a suitable virtue to exploit like we think about the global extinction of endangered species, and also the large amount of people who short of the environmental resource requirement to live a life of dignity. Today, the society need the virtue of justice to promote abandon mere mercy, from merely feeling sad for those who are misery.
