What Type Of Leader Are You?

Leadership defined is the capacity to lead. Some people are natural leaders, where others may take longer to develop and gain the trust of subordinates. A key to good leadership is to know how to motivate your employees. Without motivation, most organizations would receive minimal output from employees. The following body will describe through interview form how a successful leader motivates and understands an employees needs.

The first question asked, and probably most common, is “Do you believe supervisors can motivate employees?” The response given from this leader was “Yes, that’s the job of a supervisor. They should come up with ways to motivate them.” Setting goals for an employee to achieve are important for motivation. Personal goals, team goals, and organizational goals all factor into what drives an employee to success.

Another question asked was “How do you support employee motivation?” “By using creative ways to keep employees motivated to do the things you ask, either directly or indirectly.” This response falls into the job enrichment approach. Skill variety, Task identity, task significance, autonomy, and job feedback are core dimensions of work that play a role in how a job will satisfy someone.

The next question asked was “What do you think are the most effective motivators?” The supervisor replied “Good leaders, leaders with experience.” This fits the definition of coaching. Coaching is guiding employees when learning a new task, skill, or information. Inexperienced leaders may have a difficult time motivating subordinates. Another factor can be a supervisor’s level of motivation.

“How do you know what motivates your employees?” The response to this was “Their Actions. Knowing people and knowing what they do.” Getting to know your employees takes much time and effort. Discovering what motivates each individual as far as needs, satisfaction, expectations, and goals can help...
