1) Research Type I and Type II Diabetes.  Compare and contrast the difference between the two.

In type 1 diabetes the body's immune system attacks its own beta cells and then destroys insulin production. The kidneys strive to remove the excess glucose, which pulls water with it and leads to heavy urination and extreme thirst. Fat cells are broken down to counter sugar loss, and toxic levels of acids build up in the blood.

In type 2 diabetes the cells don't react to insulin the way they are supposed to. Therefore insulin resistance reduces the response to insulin signals. Fewer doorways are formed and glucose is locked out of the cells.

Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes include frequent urination, blurred vision, extreme thirst, and weakness as a symptom.

2)

2) Research what a Glucose Tolerance Test is.  Explain this in your lab report.

The glucose tolerance test is a lab test to check how your body breaks down sugar.

1. Which Patient has Diabetes?

Patient 2

2. After 1 hour, what happened to the patient with normal glucose processing ability?

The number decreases

3. After 1 hour, what happened to the diabetic’s glucose (sugar) level?

The number increases

4. Why did the diabetic’s glucose (sugar) level react the way that it did?

The cells of a person with diabetes have problems taking up glucose due to either the lack of insulin or a resistance to insulin. Instead, the sugar remains in the blood, resulting in the rise of blood glucose levels.
