1. We all know that gossip can hurt feelings, relationships, and reputations. However, we continue to indulge in this potentially dangerous habit. Another reason for the popularity of gossip may be our desire to know about other people’s problems and secrets—that’s why gossip tabloids sell so well. One reason why we gossip is to overcome feelings of social awkwardness and insecurity. If we can offer provocative details about others’ lives, we will always have an interested audience. In addition, gossip seems to be essential to many friendships. We feel compelled to share our own—and others’—secrets in order to create the intimate ties we crave.

2. Human beings seem to need unpredictability. For example, we would be bored and restless if the weather never changed. If there were no record cold or heat spells, no sudden downpours or destructive storms, we would miss the excitement of talking about the event and watching pitiful, but fascinating footage on television. We also seem to need unpredictability of other kinds. We may be horrified by some of the world events that occur, such as assassinations, hostage crises, and wars. But on a certain level we welcome the break in routing that these events represent.

3. Depression is not always bad. On the contrary, depression can be a positive, healthy reaction to change. Like pain, depression signals the body that something is wrong and activates a person’s inner...
