Nutek, the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth, promotes enterprise and entrepreneurship within the travel and tourism industry through boosting skills, im proving quality and cooperation. Nutek is responsible for statistics on tourism, and a key task is collecting and dissem inating information and knowledge about the development of tourism and the travel and tourism industry in Sweden. Many depend on data for making decisions. Authorities, the business community, tourism organisations, tourism consultants and research institutes often use the sources used in this publication, in addition to their own investiga tions, to analyse specific issues. The activities of tourists as well as the travel and tourism industry are highly complex phenomena, and there are rare ly any simple methods of unambiguously defining or de scribing them.
