1. Part I

My reaction to the end of the story was that I was very surprised. I didn’t think that the father wouldn’t want his own son. I was also surprised that the kidnappers paid the ransom. It was very ironic.

Part 2

The kidnappers kidnap Red Chief because they thought that his father, Ebenenzer would pay the ransom without a problem.

Some of the things Red Chief does to annoy Bill are that he knocks out bill with a slingshot, making him fall into the campfire, he smashes a boiled baked potato down Bill’s back, and he makes bill play a horse in an Indian game.

Red Chief’s father thinks that Red Chief is annoying and is a lot to take care of.

3. The criminals change as the story is told because they start to respect Red Chief more because he is very powerful. He tortures the kidnappers. Also, they start to lose hope in getting a lot of money for the ransom of Red Chief.

4. I think the funniest part of the story is when Red Chief was torturing Bill. He was trying to take Bill’s scalp off. I thought this was funny because a small 10-year-old was almost going to kill a grown man.

5. When Red chief gets older, I think he will become a criminal because his father obviously doesn’t care about him; in fact, his father didn’t care too much about him getting kidnapped. Another reason I think Red Chief will become a criminal is that he finds pleasure in torturing other people. For example, he tortured Bill in many ways, including him falling in a fire place. Lastly, I think Red Chief will be a criminal because he enjoyed being kidnapped-this means that he doesn’t care about other people.

6. I like O. Henry’s use of long words because it makes the story more interesting because one seldom hears the long words that are used. Also, it makes the reader more aware because he/she needs to use context clues to figure out the definition. It makes the story humorous because it makes the kidnappers seem smart, educated educators. However, this is the...
