1 Background

2 Why is this study needed?

By reviewing the available literature, I therefore seek to increase understanding of men’s experiences of fatherhood and the impact of social deprivation upon that experience. In particular I want to understand the social constructions of men’s masculine identities of masculinities and ultimately how fatherhood is experienced as an identity and a social role. Currently health related services strive to engage fathers in supporting parenting of children in order to improve the health and social outcomes for children. Public health data for the UK demonstrate widening health and social inequalities for children living with social disadvantage (Marmot 2010). Some argue that men and fathers continue to be ‘invisible’ in health care provision (Treadwell 2003).In attempting to understand and answer the question about the impact of social deprivation upon men’s experiences of fatherhood and their identities it will be contributing to a greater understanding of how best to support this client group and to provide more sensitive and appropriate health related services.

3 Aim: To explore how social deprivation impacts upon men’s identities and experiences as fathers
