Marketing Manager V. Sales Representative

There is a vast amount of majors one can study in college, and so many careers in those areas that one must only choose one of. It is like going into the ice cream shop and not knowing which flavor to choose since they all look so delicious. Yet, choosing a profession is very different, as one cannot just choose a job like they would a flavor of ice cream. One cannot have the Chunky Monkey today and the Cherry Garcia tomorrow, or else their life will be one Rocky Road. More thought must go into choosing the right career path; as one cannot flip flop back and forth, going from a doctor one minute to a fashion designer the next. Having narrowed the field down to business/marketing and communications, there are still infinite possibilities for careers. The two careers, a marketing manager and a sales representative, are similar in many respects, but contrast in others. In an analysis of the strengths and skills needed relative to the business and communication fields, a marketing manager seems to be a better fit for those with these essential traits than a sales representative.

These indispensable traits will be very helpful in the business world, and without them it will be more difficult to succeed and be excited to go to work every day. Being stronger in business and math than in other subjects like the arts and sciences is perfect for going into marketing specifically and the business world in general. Necessary and helpful classes for these professions are Statistics, Calculus, Principles of Marketing, Microsoft Applications, Business Dynamics, Public Speaking, Mass Media, and Economics. These courses will prove to be very useful in college and in business and marketing. They are also similar to many of the recommended and offered classes at Georgetown University for a marketing major (“Course Catalog”) and to work activities in the job.
