Describe both positive and negative characteristics you see in the nurse manager that makes her a manager and/or a leader. Discuss your experiences working with managers and/or leaders.

In viewing the video, I think that the manager showed a strong sense of ability to manage, handle the situation, and control the tardiness issues. She did not discuss with the nurse that came in to complaint about the tardiness, she reinforced to her that she was going to handle the situation even after she came in the second time. I don’t think that the signs about the unit were the best signs to have posted, and the manager should have posted signs with better regards. If there is a problem with respect, lateness, attendances, or other issues it show be sent via email and posted as a policy issue. Many leadership and manager will circle the policy for reading it and have each staff member sign it. It could be address on individual level otherwise. Issue that I see with the language in discussion was that she was drinking coffee in front of the staff member at her work area, many staff member see that as setting an example. She was very professional in the manner of addressing the policy with the staff member stating she called HR to reinforce the lateness, gave her a copy of the policy, left her explain her situation, gave opportunity for improvement, and schedule a follow up appointment.

My experience over the years have all been fair working with management up until the last about 8 years. I was in my current position and place of work for 26 years, 25 years, I was a RN IV with various levels of assignment from manager, assistant manager, leadership roles such as patient care services rep, and quality assurance rep. My manager retired 8 years ago and they appointed one of the staff nurses as an intermittent supervisor, then made her supervisor over me and another RN. So she was only supervising 2 independent RNIV that was totally independent certified in the specialty and...
