The Ecological Perspective of Transformative learning

What is transformative learning and how can this style of learning change the world and the educative styles of teaching today, How can we, the students become the teachers and vice versa. Transformative learning theory was first introduced by Jack Mezirow, author of Transformative Dimensions of Adult Learning. In his book he defines transformative learning as “The process of using a prior interpretation to construe a new or revised interpretation of the meaning of one’s experience to guide future action” (pg. 5). The concept of transformative learning is to have the students teach themselves and use critical thinking to establish and general learning environment. Transformative learning is a valid ecological perspective because it has a point of view, abilities to change a conscious mind, and can change the environment as we know it today.

Transformative learning is a point of view. In an experiment done in our SCI115 class, we were able to experience a very transformative style of learning and to many it was confusing and had no sense of direction. That because, it takes some time to get use to the concept of learning. From elementary till now, we were introduce to informational learning style, in a well coerce style where we had repetition so we were able to learn information, but we never really had to judge if the information was valid or now in our learning. To transition from a traditionally style of learning to a transformative style of learning will take some time to get use to and loosen up to the concept where the students are no longer being taught by a teacher, but the teacher and the student are equal and bring their own individual concepts to the table to get into the direction that the institution is leading into.
