Decision Problem:

• When and where will the conference be held?

Problem Analysis:

• On September 13th through 16th, 2005, an accounting system user's conference is scheduled to be held in New Orleans, Louisiana. Due to the negative effects of Hurricane Katrina on the city, it is likely that the hotel reserved for the event will not be able to accommodate the conference. This city itself has been devastated by the damage inflicted by the hurricane, and will most surely required extensive repair. This would make it impossible to change the venue of the conference to another location within New Orleans. 200 attendees have paid their registration fees to attend, and are flying in from all parts of the country. But, at this time, there is no venue to hold the conference as scheduled. This conference is crucial to the success of the company as it results in the retention of current customers, increases new business, and enhances the current product line. Senior management believes that this conference is the key to remaining competitive within the industry.

Fundamental Objectives:

• Retain current customers.

• Attain new customers.

• Remain competitive in the marketplace.

• Develop new and better products.

Means Objectives:

• Locate a time and place for the conference that will maximize attendance.

• Keep cost to the users low to ensure greater attendance.

• Attain customer input for new and enhanced product ideas.

• Secure new contracts for the accounting system.

Alternatives:

• Research other venues close the original conference location in an effort to hold the conference on the same date.

• Research hotels that charge a comparable rate close to the original location.

• Work with the local Convention & Visitors Bureau to discuss alternatives.

• Move the conference to another date and location ensuring cost remains stable.
