The way music videos have been produced, distributed and even accessed have been greatly influence by the advancement of technology over the years. In this essay I will discuss how over time the music video genre has evolved in regards to film language and technologies. To do this I will analyse and evaluate three music video from three different decades. These are, ABBA’s’s Mamma Mia (1973), Michael Jackson’s Thriller 1982) and Go Hard’s Kreayshawn (2012)

Firstly Mama Mia by ABBA (1975) . This music video was first played on television because people did not have computers and Internet yet, you would have had to watch this video on one of the music countdowns. This video was filmed in studio; witch is where most videos of the 70’s were filmed. Which is mainly because of the old really big and bulky cameras. During the 70’s the technology wasn’t as advanced as it is today, for editing the clips they used live vision mixing and for the sound they used lip-syncing and playback. The main shot you see in this music video is of the two girls singing. The reason for this is that in the 70’s the music video was mainly there so that you could see the artists in action, also it was a new time for music.

Secondly, Thriller by Michael Jackson (1984). This music video has been and will be in the top videos for many, many years. In this very well known video they use a new thing to the 80’s known as metamorphosis makeup. They transform Michael with the amazing makeup and balloons and all kinds of amazing

things, into a werewolf. This video was filmed in a studio set, with cameras on dolly’s and studio lighting. There was amazing choreography, with the dancing. One of the most amazing things about this music video is that it was first released in cinemas as a short film, afterwards first played on television late at night because of the ‘scariness’ of the video. This video is more advanced than Mama Mia in many ways by the makeup, set and editing.

Thirdly, Go Hard...
