Preliminary patent search
QR code was invented and patented by Denso Wave company, a subsidiary of Toyota in Japan. However, Denso Wave chose not to exercise their rights on QR code. This is why the QR code adoption is widespread nowadays since it is free of any license. The QR code is also published as an ISO standard.
In terms of usage, there has been several patents filed on using of QR code in different scenarios such as telephone book advertising [1], vending machine or kiosk [2] and personal health record ID card [3]. There has been no patented use of QR code in prescriptions and drug labeling.

Established solutions that address the drug information accessibility for the visually impaired include the following:
1) Scriptalk [4]: The patent was published in 2005 for the method of using RFID labels and linking the barcode reader to a voice synthesizer.
2) Rex-The talking bottle [5]: Patent was filed in 2002 but not yet issued. Invention involves engaging the audio instruction system into the pill bottle.
Fig.X Scriptalk uses RFID label attached to the pill bottle. To access the information, the reader/scanner is required [4]
Fig.X Rex-The talking bottle is a pill bottle attached with electronics, which upon activation, gives out audio instruction of medication information and usage [5]
