Journal 1 : The relationships of the two main characters

The novel that I had read “Back to the Dreamtime” is very attracting and interesting to me to read the whole story. In the novel, I found that Richard and Tom are the main characters among all the characters because they are always appeared in every chapter. The relationships between them are sibling, schoolmate and friendship. Let’s talk about Richard. He is an orphan which lost his father when he was two years old. He is an Aboriginal descent. Then, Richard was adopted by the McDonalds family, Joe and Sonya. Although Richard was adopted, but his parent treat him as he is their own child. Meanwhile, Tom, he is Joe’s son and older than Richard two months. He is Richard’s stepbrother. He is interesting in photography.

Firstly, one of their relationship is they are sibling. We can see that in chapter 2, they played cricket with their sister, Judy on the weekend. It was the favourite pastime for them. They cleaned the messy attic together with a good teamwork. Tom very concerned to Richard. He asked Richard’s decision what Richard wanted to study next year at university. Besides, he accompanied Richard went to Alice Springs to find Richard’s father’s burial ground and buried the carving. Else, he didn’t discriminate Richard as outsider even there were no kinship between them. Else, he knew that Richard was not really his younger brother but Tom stayed respect and treated Richard as a real family.

Next, they are schoolmate. They are studying in same school. Before going to school every morning, they would sit beside the railway tracks and enjoyed the moments of laziness. Besides, Richard and Tome was always secretly went out school area and sat near the cliff. Moreover, they joined the camp to Alice Spring and they had their teamwork when in the camp. This showed in chapter 1, 3 and 4 that they 2 are schoolmate.
