Within the criminal justice field, both juvenile and adult, there are many different programs and sanctions that are community based. These programs not only allow the community to be safe but they also allow the offender to have the ability to re enter into the community. In the following paragraphs I will be going over five different types of community based programs/sanctions; house arrest, day centers, halfway houses, community based work release and boot camps. I will also compare and contrast the similarities, difference and also discuss the types of agencies that would refer these types of programs.

When dealing with community based programs the first type of community based program many think about is home detention, also known as house arrest. House arrest is a form of community based program where and offender either on pretrial release or one that has already been convicted is placed in their homes and are not allowed to leave their homes unless they have had cleared it with their worker. These offenders may leave their home to only go to school, work, visiting their worker or a treatment program. Even though this is one program, there are many different ways that a person can be placed on house arrest. The two main ones are electronic monitoring and GPS. These two different programs consist of an electronic device that is placed on the offender to determine where the person is or has been. The difference in EM and GPS is the format in which the officers actually collect data. When dealing with EM a officer can either retrieve the information by when the person charges their device or by voice verification. With GPS they are able to track them all in real time, meaning that they get the information as it happens. This type of...
