The general operations at Riordan Manufacturing's facilities are quite functional. They provide the services of a high-level manufacturer over the span of several locations and do so without the use of a highly integrated wide area network. Their Intranet offers incredibly basic cooperative functionality, and many of their inventory processes are still being carried out through the use of digital transfers from hard-copy forms.

The core information system would benefit from the inclusion of a company-wide database for sharing R&D specs, inventory quantitates, and raw material shipping information. The first of these additions would be greatly beneficial at the custom order facility in Pontiac, Michigan. The ability to download the CAD specs from R&D and directly upload them to a CAD-controlled milling machine would greatly reduce custom mold production time.

Employee training and quality control are other issues of operation that should be addressed. A memorandum was composed by Gladys Thompson, a Team Superintendent at the Pontiac plant, discussing the problems voiced by employees about production quality. The memo was sent to Bernard Nykamp, the Assistant Plant Manager at Pontiac, but so far he has not given the problem his full attention.

The employees who first came forward have stated that their Production Control Technician on their shifts disregarded the issue and informed them that the final QC check would locate and eliminate these problems. The loading dock employees have also stated that they have witnessed defective products being packaged for shipping.

The company had recently cut costs by limiting employee training time. The aforementioned problem is a direct result of this. The company should immediately re-instate its original training program and also terminate employment for the Assistant Plant Manager at Pontiac and the Production Control...
