Wellness program includes organizational policies designed to facilitate employee health including allowing flex time for exercise, providing on-site kitchen and eating areas, offering healthy food options in vending machines, holding “walk and talk” meetings, and offering financial and other incentives for participation, among many other options.
It is the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve their health, and health promotion can be carried out in the workplace as well as many other settings.
It consists of a variety of activities such as :
* Health fairs
* Health education
* Medical screenings
* Health coaching
* Weight management programs
* Wellness newsletters, on-site fitness programs and/or facilities and educational programs.
How to Build a Wellness Program
Assess Your Needs
* The most common tool for assessing where health programs are most needed is a Health Risk Appraisal (HRA). This type of questionnaire reviews personal lifestyle practices (such as smoking, seat belt use, and exercise) and identifies risk factors.
* Another option is to conduct an interest survey, where you list every initiative you are willing to offer as part of your wellness program and have employees rank what they would find most valuable.
