ASSIGNMENT 2 – PAPER BOAT MAKING

1. What theories have you applied in the two runs of paper boat production?

* The theories applied during the exercise were a mix of various theories based on their definition and characterization. Exactness cannot be determined since the exercise was very short. However, organizational theories discussed during class can partially be applied.

* Theories used in RUN 1:

* Scientific Management – the concept of using methods to determine the “one best way” and emphasizing study of tasks, training/coaching, and cooperation between members.

* Human Relations

* The informal work group influenced productivity and member’s behavior.

* Cohesion, status, and group norms/culture determined output.

* Organizational Behavior

* Promotes employee effectiveness through understanding of individual, group, and organizational processes

* Exhibited Theory Y (“participative management” style)

* Theories used in RUN 2:

* Systematic Management –

* Systematized (manufacturing) operations

* Coordination of procedures and processes

* Emphasis on economical operations, inventory management, (and cost control)

* The general theory of management and some of the 14 principles of management of Henry Fayol was observed

* Bureaucracy

* Structured network of relationships among specialized positions

* Rules & regulations standardize behavior
