An individual is often influenced by the society they associate themselves with. Whether it’s their direct or indirect surroundings, certain characteristics of an individual are forged by the era and its relative environment. The difference between generations are also an indicator of how a society of a certain time period and its social rules contrast that of another generation. The need to belong can also cause an individual to conform to a group dynamics and in some circumstances surrender their own opinions to. Nonetheless an individual does still possess free will and can choose to reject society’s influence.

Certain aspects of an individual’s characteristics, thoughts, behaviour and actions can be heavily influenced by the time period they live in. Although a person’s fate is not pre-determined, the environment they’re in will shape the choices they make. The surroundings of an individual also has a large pulling factor over an individual’s motives. One time period can offer vastly different environments and surroundings to another. This could be due to significant catalysts, like war or recession, which ultimately influence an individual in many different ways. A first generation Australian youth is given many opportunities like public education and is exposed to numerous luxuries like: freedom to practice religion, opportunities to voice out against politics and new forms of media that their grandparents from another country may have not received during their adolescence. This could lead to differences in understandings of the world and a loss of culture for the youth which could jeopardise their own sense of identity. Also, as the first generation Australian will grow up in a new time period and a different set of environments many of their own beliefs may go against the traditional views of their families.
