In the American society; image is consistently held on a pedestal. The ideal body-shape/weight is a slim fit person. The perfect body image persona has taken a toll on young girls and men self-esteem. From magazines to television; the ideal perfect image is advertised. In some cases; people take the appropriate routes as to gain the perfect body image. Many implement healthy eating habits and exercises to obtain this perfect image. Others develop eating disorders. Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder in which a distorted body image is perceived by the person, eating habits are unhealthy/bodily harming and self-esteem problems enable the disease even more.

The origin of anorexia nervosa comes from Sir William Gul. He published an article publishing the term and explaining the aspects of it in the 1800s.Gul was the first person to bring the disorder to the attention of people. In 1978, The Golden Cage: The Enigma of Anorexia Nervosa was published. It was not until this article was published that people became more aware of the eating disorder. Karen Anne Carpenter was a famous American singer who died due to anorexia nervosa.She died in the 1980s; which made people even more aware of how fatal the disease could be. She died on February 4,1983. By her being a famous singer; her death brought great awareness about the disease. One of the most current celebrities suffering from the disease is Lindsey Lohan. The famous actor admitted falling to the disease after a diet went too far.

Starvation and distorting body images of self is anorexia nervosa. It is known to be one of the most common eating disorders. When a person has anorexia nervosa; one loses weight excessively. No matter how much weight a person loses; the image reflected back is always not good enough. They can lose so much weight until the imprints of their bones show. Suffers of this disease never notice the excruciating impact and severity of bad health their body is enduring.
