Part I: Group Development.

After reflecting on the case and textbook material, I think that Christine’s group is in the Storming stage which is the second stage of the team development. According to the textbook, the team development includes five stages.

The first one is Forming stage. In the stage, a group of people come together to determine and accomplish a shared purpose. And in the case, Christine is the group leader and other members of the group are Diane, Janet, Steve, and Mike. They begin discussing and coming up with high-quality ideas.

The second stage is Storming. In this stage, a tension or a conflict about mission, vision and idea might occur in the internal group. And members in a group have to deal with the tension. According to the case, Christine suggests that the group should get together before every class to discuss the day’s case. However, Mike disagrees because he doesn’t want to miss his favorite TV show. So this respond makes the rest of the group to feel uncomfortable.

The third stage is Norming. This is the stage that the group starts to work together on the assignment. The members of the group are getting along with together except for Mike. He doesn’t attend most meetings and just send in brief notes to Christine.

Performing is the fourth stage which members of the group are completing their parts in the assignment. In the case, four members have done their designated sections, but Mike has just handed in some rough handwritten notes.

The last one is Adjourning stage. In this stage, the group has completed their assignment and will perform peer evaluation. According to the case, Christine is hesitating in evaluating peer. She’s concerned about Mike. Although Mike doesn’t attend the group meetings, his ideas are really creative and that could help to raise the overall mark.
