INTRODUCTION

This case is introduced from Susan’s perspective who is a part-time worker in her college campus snack bar Devil’s Den. The Devil’s Den is managed by contract with an external company, College Food Services (CFS). Susan has narrated some incidents she encountered while working at Devil’s Den which have made her upset.

The snack bar had a policy stating that employees were allowed to eat whatever they liked free of charge while working. But some employees were seen leaving with food after their duty and even dared to eat off-duty as well. They also allowed their friends to take food for free, seeing which, many customers also started doing the same. There was easy access to the unlocked storage room door which provoked employees to “steal” food in huge quantities. Susan talked to her close friend, Mack, a student manager, about the problem and he started keeping the store locked but the problem still prevailed as the keys were still easily accessible to everyone.

Another student manager, Bill, seemed to have a different attitude. He always got the job done, “stared down” employees who allowed thefts by their friends or who took freebies themselves. In spite of this, Susan had never heard of an employee being challenged verbally, nor had anyone ever been fired for their actions.

OBJECTIVES:

1. Effective handling of management and administrative activities.

2. Improve the workplace environment and instil a sense of responsibility and pride in their job.

3. Removing the immoral or unethical practices in the snack bar, without inviting others’ criticism or disfavour.
